The Hanno Festival has its origins in the Edo period as a celebration at the Hanno Suwa Hachiman Shrine (Osuwa-sama) and the Hanno Hachiman Shrine (Hachiman-sama).

The event took its current form in 1971, continuing the traditions passed down through generations.

The festival is a beloved blend of lively parades, stage events, and traditional performances like floats and lion dances, cherished by the local community.

Highlighted Events at the Hanno Festival 2024

One of the must-see attractions is the Sokonuke Yatai (Bottomless Float).

As the name suggests, this float has no bottom, and the performers who play festival music inside walk along while playing.

Eleven different neighborhoods in Hanno will parade their floats and yatai, each with unique designs.

The impressive sight of the floats being pulled through the streets is a highlight of the festival.

This cultural tradition, said to date back to the Edo period, is a must-see!

Another unique feature of the festival is the Gedo (Outcast) Dancers performing on the floats.

Although their appearance might seem scary to young children, their distinctive and humorous dance is popular among the crowd.

The Gedo dance is a rare sight, only performed in Hanno.

If you’re curious, you can also try a sweet called “Gedo,” inspired by these dancers, available at the local confectionery shop “Yumesaika Suzuki.”

Additionally, the Civic Parade on the first day is packed with events, including a grand opening parade on Odori and various performances like outdoor concerts and Yosakoi dance.

The second day is centered on traditional events.
